During my internship at Pedro Gomes Design Studio (Portugal) in 2014, my task was to add a folding chair to a existing family of chairs.
Maria (above) is a moulded wooden chair with metal legs, which served as primary inspiration for the folding chair I designed.
José mimics Maria's form with its curved seat and filleted armrest and leg profile. Every part which would receive the most human contact is filleted (seat, foot-rest and chair back).
Comparing José (left) to Maria (right)
This is an early prototype of José. A manufacturing constraint caused the back of the seat to be thicker and heavier than the front, allowing the chair to be closed with one hand. This unintended miscaluculation added a useful user experience to the product. Several copies of José now have a home in a mall in Sétubal, Portugal.
