This is a project very close to my heart as I got to meet and collaborate with a visionary who also become one of my treasured friends. Inji had been creating illustrations for the the past year with the goal of someday combining all of her work into a unified oracle deck. That was where I got involved.
There are 65 cards in the deck, each a catalyst for self-reflection. My challenge was to convert her beautifully hand-drawn illustrations into cards of their own. Each illustration was unique so the puzzle laid in converting the circular designs into cards reflecting their personality.
I achieved this by drawing out elements from the design and incorporating it into the space around it. The key was to emphasize the design in a powerful way. Most importantly, it was ensuring that the entire deck came together as one. It slowly started to come together and look just perfect. As I worked my way around the deck, the harsher lessons from the deck ended up having a darker background and it progresses into lighter as one goes through the deck. The hand-lettering was done by Inji, making the use of this deck a completely organic experience.
