This self initiated project was, like most ideas, born out of pure curiosity. As a creative it is vital to always stay curios, to not be afraid of exploring the unknown. The concept was to show there must be something beautiful to be found in the least likely of places.

Each piece was made using a digital microscope. After carefully studying the different textures of each element, I proceeded to photograph and juxtapose the selected photographs to create individual masks or faces for each object by mirroring one half of the mask using Photoshop. Once each composition was complete I wanted to break the symmetry by adding complementing textural elements to each mask, while still maintaining a balanced composition.

The biggest challenge was the fact that the microscope images were not the best quality,  2 megapixels to be exact. Therefore I had to treat the images in photoshop to ensure the best quality for final viewing.

The following presentation is a breakdown of how each piece or mask was created.
Enjoy.
Object 1.
Thistle
Object 2.
Dead Flower
Object 3.
Coral
Object 4.
Bark
Object 5.
Maple Seed
As previously mentioned, once each composition was complete I wanted to break the symmetry by adding complementing textural elements to each mask, while still maintaining a balanced composition. In addition to this I wanted to pay homage to the still life painters of the Baroque period by making use of two of the period techniques:
1. Using the technique of Chiaroscuro (Strong contrasting lighting) and
2. Adding extra detail in the form of insects or hidden creatures for added symbolism.
Detail 1.
Moth
The Moth symbolize the life cycle, regeneration and rebirth
Detial 2.
Fly
The Fly is a symbol of rot, wasting away, decay, death and melancholia.
Detail 3.
Hermit Crab
The hermit Crab symbolise Patience, Community, Adaptation and Exploration.
Detail 4.
Spider & Ant
When a web is placed in an artwork it symbolizes the person as one who plots destruction.
An ant is a symbol of strength, diligence, willpower, honesty, unity and patience.
Detail 5.
Maggot
A Maggot is a symbol of deterioration, mortality, decadent lifestyle, Satan and Armageddon.
