CHEE KEI WONTON
Langham Place, Hong Kong

Wonton noodle is known as an iconic food of Hong Kong. It was first introduced in Hong Kong after the World War II, as a street food offered in food stalls and later in indoor eateries. Chee Kei Wonton is located in the bustling Mongkok, area in Hong Kong infamous for its street food and street markets. Migrating from the street food scene, Chee Kei Wonton is now inside the prestigious Langham Place, a 15-level commercial complex.

The interior direction embraces the subtlety of local Hong Kong and traditional Chinese elements in a modern setting. The bright neon sign vibrantly showcasing the brand’s name, creating a welcoming ambiance, and still to be recognized as the leading wonton noodle in Hong Kong. Demonstrating clean lines on the feature (noodle) wall with subtle highlights of champagne gold and silver noodle strands accentuate the lighting and take the eyes for a journey. Illustrations of shrimps (primary ingredient of a good wonton) are strategically placed on the mirror to bring a surprise element for returning customers. The restaurant is located at a semi open space inside a shopping complex, situated under the escalator. The arch structure is an example of the designers’ smart counteract to the strong bold lines of the escalator shaft, as well as using it as a lighting mount to generate a more balanced lighting.

The space balances aesthetics with practicality. Different elevations promotes flexible layout, which helps to cater for different customers’ needs, from a single diner to a large party. Counter seating along the front of the shop allows flexible, single diners on a rush. Nonetheless, the fine details of the spice rack should not be overlooked, as the chili paste and vinegar is no stranger to any wonton noodle fan. Terrazzo is used for the tabletops and counters in this project, adding a hint of retro as a nod to the old Hong Kong. The tables and chairs effortlessly tie in with the arch structure overhead, acknowledging the eyes to wander for the next design detail the designers have thoughtfully put in.
