Macbeth - Opera Ballet Vlaanderen (2018)

Case study
Before I started sketching, I did a lot of research on the story of Macbeth. The story had tons of interesting aspects in it like ambition, regicide, violence, regret, abuse of power and alcohol and also delusions.

Macbeth is also a play people can identify themselves with, or others, something to keep in mind.

Concept
I came up with several ideas to visualise these powerful themes. In the end I made my choice to go with the fallen chalice. The image I created represents a few of the main aspects of the story.

The wine represents the blood that has flown for Macbeth to conquer the throne. The shape of the blood represents death, of course, but also his delusions when he's struggling with his conscience. Because of these delusions he drops the chalice and realises what he has done, regretting his murders. In the story you also notice Macbeth's an alcoholic. These are some main aspects of the story I put into one powerful illustrative and animated visual.

Visuals
I chose for a very flat illustrative style without to many details, because my image would be powerful enough to convey the story to the audience and it had to be easily animated.

End product
The result was a 1080x1920px digital poster that loops every 6 seconds.
