PROJECT: Viimeinen Laiva (The Last Ship)

The Turku City Theatre needed key art and an advertising campaign for their opening musical, the first play staged at the newly renovated theatre. Sting's the Last Ship, a Broadway musical never before performed in Europe was to open the theatre season and needed a poster image that would not only equal the epic scope of the musical but also entice audiences to visit the new theatre. No costume design was available and the schedule was tight, which meant no time for photoshoots and reliance on stock photography for compositing.

The campaign was created around the building of the ship itself, comparing the building of the ship to that of finishing the theatre building, with the tagline "A new musical ready to set sail" ("Uusi musikaali valmiina vesille"). Turku is a port city with a long history of shipbuilding, and the poster was designed to evoke the nostalgia and romanticism of shipbuilding in the eyes of Turku residents. Sunset, workwear and scaffolding alluded to the folksy nature of the music composed by Sting.
