Karinkali( Black Kali goddess) performance is a ritualistic performance of Paraya community in the regions of western Palakkad, Southern Malappuram and some parts of Trichur district in Kerala. The ritual is performed after the harvesting season. Karinkalis can occur as vazhipadu or offering by individuals or families.sometimes a group of artists will also perform. During the ritual, the person performing it is considered to be god and, therefore, everybody, including those from the upper castes, bows their heads in reverence. But once the ritual ends, Karinkali’s will become unequal and ungodly. Most of the artists work as daily wage labourers in nearby places. Their Monthly income is low when compared to the state’s average. The anger and aggression these karinkali’s show during the festival is their resistance against the caste hierarchy followed still in the region.
