Arrowheads Are Not What They Seem!

I cannot even remember how I managed to work and create linear illustrations and designs in Adobe Illustrator before I started creating my own arrowheads—they save so much time, allow to very easily and super quickly create tons of alternative versions, and even help me to stumble upon some unexpected results which I wouldn't create intentionally. Efficient workflow is everything, so whilst arrowheads take a bit of time to create—especially if you go a little bit over the top and find yourself creating hundreds of them, like I have done—ultimately they prove to be a fantastic resource in a long run!

This project is based on my Skillshare class Creating Custom Arrowheads for Styling Linear Vector Graphics in Adobe Illustrator and features a few of my favourite recent examples of using arrowheads to style different types of graphics, including monoline illustrations, patterns, digital lettering and linear designs.

Most of the examples below are animated GIFs just to highlight how easy it is to create numerous versions of designs whilst starting off with the same basic open paths! Please enjoy, and don't hesitate to check out my class to learn everything you need to know to be able to create your own properly functioning arrowheads in Adobe Illustrator and get the most out of them when applying them to your work!

What can grow on a tree? This tree illustration is included in our class resources, so you too can customise it any way you want!

Abstract pattern, becoming less abstract depending on what arrowheads are used.

Adding serifs to custom line lettering is so much fun and so quick & easy with arrowheads!

Arrowheads are also a quick way of making this kind of hipster logos.

Just a few different arrowheads bring this pattern to life!

A little selection of my custom arrowheads from different sets. Some of them are fantastic and I keep on using them over and over again for different purposes, and some are a little more experimental (e.g. Abstract 70 – Abstract 73) which seemed like a great idea when I created them, yet I haven't really used them yet.

Just a few squiggles and whatnot, most of them also taken a step further, expanded and coloured differently.
