OVERVIEW
The Kalamazoo Valley Museum has a large collection of local and regional historical artifacts that make up their "Core Collection". Their most prized items are on display as part of a 3 story shadow box located in the very center of their facility. Visitors can view these artifacts while standing in small balconies as they climb stairs to each level of the museum.
It was decided to replace the original flip-book artifact guides located on each balcony with touch screen kiosks. The design I presented used existing images and new photography to allow visitors to see otherwise un-viewable details of artifacts sitting some 15 feet away across the 3 story atrium.
The kiosk design also allowed for more information to be displayed about each artifact, which turned an interesting architectural feature into a thematic exhibit that visitors love.

PROJECT EXAMPLES
INTERFACE DESIGN: This clip shows how the animated interface allows visitors to select any artifact from any level of the wall and learn more about it in a local historical context.
The photographic wood strip that houses the interface buttons was chosen to match the wood species of the balcony handrail.
PAGE LAYOUTS: The ability to expand the amount of information available to visitors by using the interactive kiosks allows them to more easily understand an artifact's relevance to their community.  My design included using existing and new photography to create artistically interpreted illustrations for each page as well as allowing visitors to see close up detail they couldn't otherwise see.
