As Official Patron of the Ryder Cup, OMEGA created a special edition watch and dedicated their support for Team U.S.A.To solve budget and time constraints, our idea had to be simple: focus on the glorious history of the Ryder Cup through reflections on its' surface. We used a selection of archive footage starting with a section of black and white film of founder Samuel Ryder dedicating the cup to the competition between the nations.
Pre-edited footage played out famous golfing events through time and we filmed the natural distortions of the footage as it reflected on the surface of the cup. Using a pair of digital screens set on either side as the cup rotated on a turn table we were able to create a rich in-camera visual effect and reinforce the idea of rivalry between the two teams.
Why not use CGI? A number of reasons: It wouldn't necessarily be any faster than shooting the cup itself. It wouldn't be cheaper and on top of that, we would lose the spontaneity of the distortions happening for real. Even though 3D rendering has achieved so much, it's seems more premium and appropriate that fans get to see something they don't usually get to see. Seeing the crafted crests and details of the winner's names engraved with every scratch in macro detail gives fans something to appreciate - for it is all about the trophy.
