This project was an exercise in abstract problem solving. We were given an entire paragraph from "The Social Contract" by Jean Jacques Rousseau and had to translate it into a graphic language. The translation had to be stamped onto a 5'x7' canvas with black ink.

We were asked to think about every little thing that already exists in the English language now. How do you capitalize something? How do you stop and start a sentence?

The goal was to make every symbol do a lot of work. The less symbols the better. We had previously studied a city block, at the urban scale, so I took advantage of some of the things it had to teach me. The city block had two tall buildings on each side of it, so that's how I decided to stop and start my "sentences."

In the end, I ended up using a family of shapes, depending on how they are flipped as to what they meant, to tie the entire thing together.
