1. Understand the Problem
- Consider what the goal is for this project?
to successfully create a silhouette
- What is a Silhouette?
a dark shape (outline) with back lighting (lighter background)
- What are the challenges you must meet to be successful?
balancing the over exposure in the foreground to achieve a dark outline
- What is your assignment?
to successfully create 2 silhouettes
2. Research and Investigate
A silhouettes are the most successful when the shape in the front is almost completely black from the shadows. Below are pictures I found to be very successful in having a dark subject with a light colored background. These backgrounds range in colors from plain with to oranges and blues.
3. Generate Possible Solutions
-sunset with a couple on a bench
-sunset with a couple walking the a park holding hands
-in front of a fire a group of friends jumping
-someone riding their bike at sunset
-someone running in front of a sunset
-houses in front of a sunset/sunrise
4. Select AND DEVELOP Best Solution
-houses in front of a sunset/sunrise
-sunset with a couple walking the a park holding hands
6. Test and Evaluate
I ended up re-shooting on 3 different occasions because of testing I had to do through many different types of compositions. There were many times I thought I understood what a silhouette was only to find out after shooting that it wouldn't work like it did in my head.
7. Produce
The house with the sunrise picture I wanted to try to capture the different colors in the sky and was hoping that there would be more clouds, however every time I would plan to shoot there were different weather obstructions such as rain or snow. There would also be the issue of not a lot clouds so I made do with what I could shoot.

The picture of the couple in the park in front of the lake, I could not get my friends to do that picture so I instead used some of the pictures that I shot at for an engaged couple. I also did shoot a few pictures of them holding hands or kissing, but I found in my practice that flags are very interesting to shoot with because of their transparency. I decided that the pictures holding hands and kissing looked boring and very cliché, I wanted to diverge from that so I changed my mind about which one I liked better.
