The Raven - Set Design and Construction

SELF-DIRECTED UNIVERSITY PROJECT
Influenced by the historical work of Edgar Allan Poe and his poem 'The Raven', I chose this as my source of Inspiration, as the brief required bringing a concept into fruition based soley around the idea of 'death'.

In order to portray the significance of death in the poem, I chose to transcribe one of the most crucial elements; the Gothic Door.

Using this element as a visual narrative to represent the journey into the afterlife, I have exaggerated Architectural aspects to emphasize the key concepts and ideas of the poem i.e framing the Bust of Pallas. This feature is used to personify both Wisdom and Truth, reflecting the purpose and intention of the Raven, as its message 'Nevermore' appears to come from a higher wisdom and not only 'stock and store'.

With focus on scenic painting, finishes and effects on the door, through various layers of wood graining, glazing and distressing, the Gothic wooden panels and pillars come together to create a rustic and symbolic asthetic.

The exaggerated Architectural aspects emphasize the key concepts and ideas of the poem.
All aspects, excluding door handles and coving, were constructed in a 3 week period, and is scaled down to three-quarters the original size, due to limited space.
