Background
The South Carolina Stingrays were founded as an East Coast Hockey League expansion franchise in 1993. The South Carolina Stingrays play home games at the North Charleston Coliseum located in North Charleston, South Carolina. The team's original logo was designed prior to their first season and has been referred to as "a classic among minor league hockey logos."
From 2000 to 2008, the South Carolina Stingrays used, what has been called, the worst minor league logo of all time.
The Joe Bosack Co. was hired to redesign the South Carolina Stingrays logo in 2008. In 2012, this design was named one of the five best minor league logos of all time.
To commemorate their 25th anniversary during the 2017 - 2018 season, the South Carolina Stingrays and Icethetics.co hosted a 25th anniversary logo and jersey design contest at the end of 2016 year. This 25th anniversary logo would be used as a patch on both shoulders of the designed commemorative jersey.
Contest Rules
Only original artwork could be submitted however, the anniversary logo could incorporate elements from past or present Stingrays logos. Artwork had to be submitted prior to the deadlines and had to be submitted as PDF, SVG, AI, PNG, or JPEG formats. There was a limit of two entries per designer for each contest (two logos and two jerseys). There were no specific requirements as to font style or color.
Contest Timeline
From August 24 to September 5, 2016 at 8:00 PM, artists could design and submit their 25th anniversary logo designs. Between September 6 and September 11, 2016, the South Carolina Stingrays would select three to five finalists. From September 12 to September 18, 2016, Icethetics readers would vote for the winning logo from the finalists and the winning 25th anniversary logo would be unveiled on September 19, 2016.
Selection and Voting
Following the submission deadline, Stingrays staff and ownership selected three to five finalists, from which the winning design would be determined by a public vote conducted at www.icethetics.co.
Design
As it was possible to submit two designs, I tried to create two different designs. The first design was a banner-style that incorporated elements from previous logos while the second design was a more traditional badge anniversary logo.
