SCI-Arc Graduate Thesis 2010- Jordan

SCI-Arc Graduate Thesis 2010-Jordan
Spent some time helping my friend Jordan on his thesis.
Some might ask, too soon? Perhaps, as my own thesis was only completed last April, but I found I just couldn't help myself. Jordan Su approached me with a modeling challenge. He asked me to model the Watts Towers in Rhino for his thesis project. After I finished working on that, he asked if I could render some "naked" images from the model just to see it with some sunlight and shadows. The idea was that after rendering, these images could be used as a canvas on top of which a series of other images could be collaged into an artistic compilation.
Aerial perspective matched from a Google Earth view.
View from the neighborhood.
Southerly view of the project and the extension of the existing parkway connecting it to the towers.
Northerly low aerial perspective.
This was a pretty fun challenge and a great idea for representation. It reminds me that sometimes it is good to work in layers. Rendering a scene before the project is actually completed allows someone else to work from the image as a background that can later be substituted or spliced. The actual techniques and color schemes can be worked out in advance without having to have the final rendering in place.
View looking south from the train station.
