Client: BROADWAY CINEMATHEQUE

Director Edward Yang once said the film title 一一 (Yi Yi which means ’one-one’) represented what supposed to be the simplest and most natural thing - relationship between ‘one’ human and another ‘one’ human. One plus one is two, and that’s exactly the English title ‘A One and A Two’. Contradictorily, within 173 minutes film time he showed us all sorts of complicating human relationships. At the end of the film, through the key character, 8 years old boy Yang-Yang, director reminded every audience if we really try to start seeing things on the most rawest and simplest side, relationship/life can be just so simple. 

Therefore on the poster I wanted to focus on how the very curious and pure boy, Yang-Yang, looked at our complicated adult World. Since the chinese types of the film title visually shares the same simplicity of the roman numerals 1 & 1 (two vertical strokes rotate into two horizontal strokes), so I have simply used two bold horizontally-placed ’1’ to replace the ‘one’ in chinese. And the whole visual follows the rotation and so we have this simple and beautiful, peaceful but confusing poster.

As a set of collection, the poster of A Brighter Summer Day shares the same concept.
