Master Student Project 3
January 2017
Belgrade, Serbia
collaboration: Ana Marija Golob

The new cultural center is placed within an old industrial area of Belgrade which includes the abandoned fabric factory Beko. The idea is to connect two important Belgrade sites - down part of Belgrade fortress and the Danube river bank, to create a new urban scene in this old part of the city. As a reaction to the massive structure of the factory, a new artificial hill is made, and turned into geometrical modules (8m x 8m x 4m). With this new geometrical mass, different spaces are created. These spaces are for people who need a free place for creative work  (music, art, design...). Modules  are grouped and formed in relation with the activities that are performed in them. The whole site can later be upgraded, adding new modules, which gives an opportunity for this creative zone to develop further, depending on users needs. Materials that were chosen for the modules are similar to the materialization found in the area (old industrial materials and stone from the fortress can be seen near the site). That is why the combination of wood, concrete and stone was the primary choice. On the other hand, green modules were a reaction to the vegetation on the hill and the Institute for vegetation research that is near.
The second part of the project included the revitalization of the fabric factory. The massive concrete building was treated with the similar concept of modules as the rest of the area. The facade and concrete inside structure of the building were left in its original shape, adding a new part  constructed from steel and glass, with free spaces for adding modules. The whole factory building, with its extension, represents the center of the creative area, with spaces for gardening, sports, art and similar activities.
