The Laramie Project, a play by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project, explores the 1998 murder of University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard.  Mathew Shepard was beaten and left tied to a fence in rural Wyoming. The murder is believed to be motivated by homophobia.

Because The Laramie Project is not a linear story but rather a collection of reflections and memories the set is comprised of simple abstract spaces that provide different playing levels and large areas that can be lit to indicate the mood.  The coat racks that run along the back provide a place for actors to hang the costume pieces used to assume different characters.  The focal point of the design is a section of fence, representing the fence where Mathew Shepard was left to die, upstage center.  In front of the bare back drop it suggests the vast emptiness of the landscape. A piece of scrim hangs in front of the fence allowing it to appear and disappear as the lights change.
