Motif Magazine is an independent arts and culture publication that focuses on a different, inspiring subject for each issue. Each theme is explored through essays, illustration and design to create an eclectic mix of inspiration for the modern artist.

This issue explores the theme of Chaos Theory, and the various creative processes that can stem from the meeting between order and chaos.

An initial set of pattern tiles were created as basic units to serve as constructors for the generative pattern. These basic units were then fed into an algorithm that flipped and rotated the initial patterns into new larger two-by-two groups. This output resulted in the formation of more varied patterns. The resulting tiles from this process were then fed into the same algorithm once more to create the final pattern on the magazine cover.

The magazine features pull-out sections to showcase various generative artworks. This provides readers with a more interactive experience as they move through the content, and a bigger presentation format for artists to fully showcase their works.

Essays and written content are made more interesting through the use of layers in the editorial design. Some sections use transparency while others employ the use of tracing paper to occlude and overlay designs to make the reading experience more entertaining.
