Parade of Lost Souls

Parade of Lost Souls
Graphic / Print Design, Art Installation
The Parade of Lost Souls is an annual event organized by Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret, taking place annually on the Saturday closest to Halloween. Parade activities are centred around Britannia Community Centre and Grandview Park in East Vancouver. The route of the actual parade varies year by year and is publicized only 24 hours before the event.

In addition to the Parade itself, artists of various disciplines are invited to create installations or public performances as part of the event.

I have participated in this event three times to date:

2015
Setup/tear down of Shrine Arcade installation

2016
Graphic Design - Elemental Cards
Performance / handing cards to members of the public
Setup of Wild Primal Elemental installation

2017
Art Installation - Metaphysical Cellphones
Graphic Design - Signs for Pyramid Altar
2017 - Pyramid Altar Signs

A series of five 6" x 4" signs for a large Pyramid Altar set up in the grounds of Britannia School. The design was based on official POLS 2017 branding elements.
2017 - Metaphysical Cellphones

The theme for Parade of Lost Souls 2017 was "Altar of the Ego". In this day & age of technology, selfies and social media, the cellphone was the perfect element for an installation in the spirit of the theme, with a small piece of social commentary to boot. After all, don't we all curate a version of ourselves online, one designed to paint ourselves in the best possible light? When one version of the virtual ego self is no longer needed, it can be deleted and replaced at will with a simple swipe or a tap of a button.

Preliminary sketches of the phone screens were created in Adobe Illustrator. The frames of the phones were constructed with flat cedar wood strips. Foam pool noodles were cut in half, painted black and glued to the support frame. For the screens, large sheets of cardboard were cut to shape and painted black. The front "screen" designs were sketched in pencil (with some minor adjustments to the content), before being painted and attached to the support frames.

Although the installation was not as interactive as I would have liked (due to a combination of time, budget and illness), it was nonetheless enjoyed by the parade goers and general public.
2016 - Elemental Cards

A series of 4 cards, based on the elements of Earth, Air, Fire & Water. This particular project was a collaboration with my father-in-law, Ron Skolney-Elverson, as part of his Wild Primal Elemental shrine installation. He chose the characters (Bean Sidhe, Undine, Sylph & Brigit) and wrote the copy. I created composite images of each elemental character in Photoshop, using various stock photos. The final composites were imported to Illustrator for card / text layout and addition of vector graphic elements.

The cards were printed out and added to the relevant elemental shrine. Some were handed out to the members of the public as they made their way through the installation.
