This Is America

The image of Childish Gambino running away from a crowd at the end of This Is America really stuck in my head. I knew that I wanted to try and recreate it. After a quick sketch with a reference that I abandoned, I did a version from memory, no reference.
Later, I tried another version, this time with reference. this version, while not really resembling CB, really helped me cement the shading I would do later. At this point I knew that, if I wanted to create an image that would be easily recognizable, I'd have to do some blocking
Here I am partway through the blocking. My reference image didn't have the detail I wanted so some of the features are guesses/assumptions
Final before shading. At this point, all the really hard work is done and it's pretty much just a paint by numbers project.
Partway through shading. I made sure to do the lightest areas first to minimize smearing from the darker graphite/charcoal pencils. I also worked with a cover sheet of paper so as not to smear any graphite with my hand.
All the skin and eyes finished. The only thing left is the hair.
So, here is the final pencil drawing. Obviously there are things I can improve on but, I consider this piece part of that practice that will allow me to improve
I made a high resolution scan of the image and then made a little adjustment to the levels as well as the brightness/contrast. If I'd really wanted to, I could have converted it to Black & White but it didn't seem necessary. I avoided messing too much with the main features and hair but I did use the smudge tool to help even out the skin values and try to make the transitions more natural. I also couldn't keep myself from adding some lower teeth to the digital version.
