Speculative Design: The Sanctuary

Brief: Remember the Future
(i) To research on the historical backgrounds of contemporary keywords related to art, design and media;

(ii) To imagine and reinvent possible scenarios set in the far future that re-enunciates or explores these keywords;

(iii) To visualise these reflections and explorations into feasible visual artifacts that express a coherent concept or idea surrounding these reflections; a provocative critique on our past and present to be materialised in a  potential fictitious future.

Zoographia
Zoographia refers generally to the description of animals and specifically to both the scientific classification (zoology) and the pictorial representation of animals. By attaching the term “zoography” to a cultural/semiotic understanding of human and animal nature, zoography can describe, or rather explain, any symbolic representation of animals, from cave painting to poetry to computer animation, that identify “animal” as other and use the “violence” of mimesis to maintain this metaphysical divide. In a sense, the use of zoology and species classification to separate what is ‘human’ and what is ‘animal’ gives us superiority to organise and act on other organisms.

Hence, this project examines what would happen if this boundary happens to blur (as it has already seemed to happen with cloning technologies) – how would we negotiate the physical differences and how it relates to our collective identity as humans?

The Sanctuary
…is a government run sanatorium (spa and health facility) under the Department of Public Health that is made compulsory for all citizen inflicted with AMS (Amphibian Mutation Syndrome) for the treatment of their afflictions. It aims to provide a place of healing with their line of specialised equipment that also promote positive outlooks and inclusive attitudes, and acts as a place of rehabilitation to transition patients into a productive life.
At the same time, however, the Sanctuary (and the government) uses its monopoly over AMS treatment to control and monitor the citizens – for example, it is compulsory for the user to register their identity before being able to access the functions of the machines needed to treat AMS ailments. In this sense, despite The Sanctuary attempting to change to negative viewpoint towards AMS, it also uses it as a point of exploitation on the citizens.

The Sanctuary: Design Context
For this project, the deliverables include the logo for The Sanctuary, the design of the Unit and its subsidiaries, the attached user manual for the Unit, and the series of posters used to promote The Sanctuary and its ideologies.

The project is to be presented in a gallery space as a simulation of the actual space of the Sanctuary. Hence, as an immersive gallery exhibit, viewers can be invited into The Sanctuary to get to know about its various aspects, as if they were its patrons.
The project could also potentially be brought out of the gallery context and placed (as a guerrilla exhibit) in real world contexts, to juxtapose between the ‘real’ and the ‘unreal’.
