Dimensions Vol. 25

Dimensions Vol. 25
Dimensions is the annual, student-produced journal of architecture at the University of Michigan. It seeks to contribute to the critical discourse of architectural education by documenting the most compelling work produced by its students, faculty, fellows, and visiting lecturers.

Dimensions Vol. 25, produced by Robin Chhabra, Emily Kutil, Elizabeth Nichols, Steven Scharrer, and myself, was the longest issue to date. As the silver anniversary of the journal, we wanted to not only make a clear statement about the school and those involved in the program, but also a statement about the journal’s history and future.

In the design we emphasized cleanliness and clear hierarchy of content, a reaction to the proliferation of chaos as a substitute for content. For inspiration we looked back into the history of the publication and found a wealth of both thought and design. As an important landmark we also too a retrospective look at its evolution over the years, creating a timeline on the inside covers that expresses, in meticulous detail, the changes of the design and direction over the years. This all  culminated in a release party and presentation on the history of the publication that included commentary by previous advisors, deans, and supporters of the publication, including Bob Beckley, Tom Buresh, Brian Carter, John McMorrough, and Christian Unverzagt.

This volume was awarded a 2012 Douglas Haskell Award for Student Journals Honorable Mention. The journal was cited by the selection committee for its "focus on theme and quality of essays." University of Illinois at Chicago's Fresh Meat received the 2012 Douglas Haskell Award, and Columbia University's URBAN also received an Honorable Mention.
