De Stijl
A time of a new (Whitehead, 2018). The fathers of De Stijl was Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg. De Stijl started in 1917 and ended in 1931. (The Art Story, n.d.) Piet Mondrian said that De Stijl is "only primary colours", "only squares and rectangles" and "only straight, horizontal and vertical lines." It was only later that they started to rebel and use diagonal lines. The objective of De Stijl wasn't to reflect reality, but rather to express harmony - which is the law of universe. They believed it was the path to truth and purity, seeing as World War I was happening around them, they wanted to bring order to a world that was in destruction and chaos.

One can say that De Stijl is inspired by mathematics. It embraced abstract, paired down essence. It was a-symmetrical. The diagonal lines create energy, movement and/or dynamism. It is a flat plane of colours and they only use 3 colours, and abomination of a colour and a non-colour.

Figure 1: Piet Mondrian, 'Composition with yellow, blue and red', 1937-1941, (Flask, n.d.).
Top left corner is a yellow rectangle, right bottom is a red square in black lines and in the left-hand, bottom corner is a blue line/rectangle. There is also a little red square on the right bottom, in line with the blue line. The black lines confine most of the colours, except for the blue and red that's in line with each other.

Harmony and order is prominent in this image, seeing as the squares and rectangles can be seen in relation with each other.
