SCANOGRAPHY: MY OWN BUSINESS

An experimental photography project done with a digital scanner. This is a compilation of four images that correlate to the coexistence of foreigners and locals in Singapore.

In this experiment, the first two images were made abstractly with the use of curtain hooks, a blue bag and an orange colour sheet. The hooks are a representation of localism. People minding their own businesses and “swimming” in their own ignorance; the societal acceptance of being “a local”. In the second image, the hooks represent the same thing, however the red fingers represents the foreign world, trying to grasp the ideation of social acceptance in a country they are sometimes deemed unwelcome.

The next two images were done with people, placing their hands and faces onto the scanner. The help of an orange colour sheet was used as well. These images speak of the same idea: the red stained hands of their plea to grasp localism and acceptance, turned into the eventual colour of their lost hope, returning them the natural colour of their hardworking hands.
