Chris's American Restaurant (Fiddler's Restaurant)'s profile

Brookfield Restaurant Has Had Many Faces in 90 Years

During the mid-2000s, Chris’s American Restaurant in Brookfield, Connecticut, operated in a location that is home to 80 years of culinary history. Prior to its rechristening as Chris’s American Restaurant by its owner, Chris Bruno, the dining establishment was the setting for quite a few different restaurants and bars.

At its inception, the location served as a hot dog stand. After changing hands in the 1920s, the stand was converted to Ed’s Cigar Box, a local bar that transformed into a popular speakeasy during Prohibition. Later, husband-and-wife team Jimmy and Lena Lavelle named the site Lavelle’s Wagon Wheel and operated their business through the 1950s.

During the last five decades, restaurants ranging from steakhouses to Irish pubs have all operated out of the same location. The Red Rooster and Fiddler’s Restaurant were among the most recent businesses to operate there, before Chris’s American Restaurant opened in 1990. Today, the restaurant is owned by Eli Hawli and has evolved into 189 Sports Cafe.
