“Solstice”

The inner clock of an Estonian is set according to the solstice. Already in the early spring, the expectancy of white nights comes upon every Estonian. When this time finally arrives, everyone is always amazed by how special the white nights really are. The delight of the white nights reaches its peak with the summer solstice, and soon after which a slight sadness begins to roll over the Estonian population, gradually increasing until the darkest time of the year arrives once again. The longest nights in November and December are a time of self-reflection which is followed once again by a sense of hope – while still far away, the solstice is still coming.

The golden and silver coins depict the two defining moments of the essence
of Estonians – the summer and the winter solstices.
"Grow!"

Consisting of a pair of coins, the competition entry "Grow!" tells the story of how the results of our past actions can be seen today. The right action at the right time can lead to the rise of a country just as one small tree is the beginning of a forest. Both the forest and the country grow and change over time. And what they will look like in the future, depends on how they are treated now.
"Longing"

In our land which has such a hectic history, flavours and landscapes associated with home are just as important and close to our souls as national symbols.

Estonia´s coastline and the idea of being a sea country are dear to us all but we haven't always been able to take it for granted. For Estonians, the sea is a symbol of freedom and spaciousness. The golden coin depicts the wide but flat horizon of our sea.

The unique flavours of this sea bordered region – the Baltic sprat and black bread – have over time become dearly beloved symbols on their own. On the silver coin, two coats are formed – on the obverse, Estonia´s large coat of arms with three lion shields and, on the reverse, three sprats on a slice of black bread.
