National Speech & Debate Association’s EBA Program

Cash Guts, a socially conscious student at TOPS Elementary in Seattle, Washington, was a two-time Student of the Month award winner while enrolled at Lowell Elementary and the recipient of TOPS’ 2016 Humanitarian Award and 2015 Drum Major for Justice Award. Additionally, Cash Guts of Seattle maintains membership with the National Speech and Debate Association.

Committed to connecting and inspiring a diverse community of students, the National Speech and Debate Association provides students with a variety of competitive opportunities and educational resources, including the Evidence-Based Argumentation (EBA) program. This professional development program helps teachers of all subjects create an environment that encourages analysis, questioning, problem solving, and critical thinking in their students.

A joint project of the Boston Debate League and National Speech & Debate Association, EBA accomplishes its goal by combining mentorship, lesson plans, and collaboration between educators. It does not provide teachers with a specific curriculum to follow, instead offering them tools with which they can teach their students various debate skills.

At schools where EBA has been implemented, students’ ability to write arguments increased by 49 percent, and their ability to draw evidence from informational texts increase by 115 percent. Meanwhile, 90 percent of teachers who consistently use the program report improvements in their students’ reading capabilities, and 100 percent report an improvement in oral language skills.
