Activity 1
Intro to Special Effects and Motion Graphics

VFX, SP/FX & Practical Effects

- Define Special Effects
-Special effects are stunts, such as car stunts, and large-scale effects like water clearing from areas, and so on. Special effects usually use props, then are filmed a certain way to make the viewer believe that a small prop may be larger, or a character is larger or smaller than they actually are.

- Define Visual Effects
-Visual effects are effects put in place after filming, commonly with a green or blue screen. Props can also be used, and then added on to later with visual effects.

- Define Practical Effects,
-Practical effects are effects used that require little to no additions. Puppets are a good example of practical effects.

- What is chroma-key, green screen, garbage mattes?  What are the differences and similarities?
-Chroma-key is where a colour in a film or TV show is replaced with a background.
-Green screen allows for a separated background in film or TV. This technique in called chroma-key.
-Garbage mattes allow film editors to choose which pixels are visible and which aren’t.
-All three of these editing techniques use some form of removal from a film in order to create special and visual effects and to help to create an illusion in film.

- Identify 5 practical effects,
-Yoda (puppets)
-Jabba the Hutt
-Snow
-Wind
-Sounds (such as explosions, thunder, etc.)

How does a user import footage in After Effects?
-In After Effects, go to File, Import, and then choose where the footage is saved.

What are “Motion Graphics”?
-Motion Graphics are pieces of footage used to create the illusion of movement.

What is Compositing?
-Compositing is the combination of two or more images.

What is Frame Rate?
-Frame rate is the amount of frames put into a production, usually represented as FPS (Frames Per Second). The ideal frame rate for smooth movement is 24 FPS.

What is a composition?
-A composition is a completed work of images, or footage.

Why should you Render (RAM Preview)?
-Rendering creates a file for a project, and protects the quality of the video. Rendering also ensures that the audio and video are synchronized.

What is adaptive resolution and OpenGL?
-OpenGl defines graphics in 2D and 3D.

Outline the steps required to export compositions:
-To export a composition, go to file, then to export, then choose add to render queue.

Video Compositions With Effects

(This is late because the first version of this got corrupted)
Digital Video Effects commonly called DVEs, are digital visual effects that provide transitions from one scene to another, rather than making hard cut frame translational changes. DVEs include fading or dissolving frames, wiping from one frame to another, and frame flipping. More complex effects might include morphing, depending on director’s intent.  Many of these effects will be explained in this activity.
DVEs are used in by the broadcast television industry in live production environments like television studios, outside broadcasts or during any other program productions.

Animation is the rapid display of a sequence of images of 2-D or 3-D artwork or model positions in order to create an illusion of movement. It is an optical illusion of motion due to the phenomenon of persistence of vision, and can be created and demonstrated in a number of ways. The most common method of presenting animation is as a motion picture or video program, although several other forms of presenting animation also exist.

Keying and Transparency

Keylight:
-Keying is a technique for compositing two images or frames together in which a colour (or a small colour range) from one image is removed (or made transparent), revealing another image behind it. This technique is also referred to as colour keying, colour-separation overlay, greenscreen, and bluescreen. It is commonly used for weather forecast broadcasts, wherein the presenter appears to be standing in front of a large map, but in the studio it is actually a large blue or green background. The meteorologist stands in front of a bluescreen, and then different weather maps are added on those parts in the image where the colour is blue. If the meteorologist wears blue clothes, their clothes will become replaced with the background video. This also works for greenscreens, since blue and green are considered the colours least like skin tone.

I couldn't figure out how to get sound in, because I never learned Premiere. I may come back to this later and try and figure it out if I have time.
