"Newsies" Theatrical Poster
Student Work
"Newsies" is a musical play based on the New York City Newsboy Strike of 1899. When magnate Joseph Pulitzer tries to increase his profits by raising the cost of "The World" for his newspaper boys, the newsies fight back for a livable wage by refusing to sell papers and preventing others from doing so.
Much like the materials used to create this poster, the newsies were a little rough around the edges from hard work and a harder existence; however, against all odds, they gain the support they need to overcome the much larger and stronger "World," as illustrated by the overlapping words in the center of the poster.
This poster was created entirely photographically. The wood and lead type were laid out by hand, and the image was captured with my Canon T1i.
