The Explorer: Mixed Media Calligraphy

THE EXPLORER
A series of mixed-media works inspired by personal travels that by
combining film photography, hand calligraphy, Japanese text, and bold pastels,
achieves a distinct and organic style of typography.

ONE: THE ARCTIC CIRCLE
(HOKKIOKU-KEN)
Amongst the vast, deserted fjords of West Greenland is nested a 150km-long hiking route called the Arctic Circle Trail, that, as its name suggests, sits just atop the Arctic Circle. In early April, the serene snowscape is tinged with ultramarine and cold turquoise. The quiet simplicity of the scene is contrasted by the complexity of the characters that, with generous brushstrokes, convey spring's abundant life waiting to be released. Pictured: hills seen in the distance while crossing a frozen lake near Innajuatooq.
TWO: COPENHAGEN
(KOPEN-HĀGEN)
The early afternoon air in Copenhagen, Denmark is crisp, cool and just a little lazy; the dazzling sun and the fading shadow of lunch lulls one into a lounging mood. The city, with its range of desaturated yet still vibrant hues, strikes a perfect balance between stillness and movement. The warm salmon pink of the characters highlights the subtler shades of green and yellow in the scene and exudes a quaint yet lively ambience.

THREE: THE HIMALAYAS, NEPAL
(NE-PĀRU)
There is nowhere quite like the Nepalese Himalayas. The land oozes with a richness that permeates the culture, the colors, the food, until it seeps like honey through the seams of one’s soul. As the altitude rises, the natural landscape morphs and fades into white snow and grey clouds, but the warm, earthy tones of umber and emerald, here augmented by the yellow ochre characters, continue to burst forth through the kind eyes of the Nepalese people.
