WAVE

 Concept Statement
Once triggered, the rush of anticipation and excitement evokes a desire to keep it going. The Kallang Wave was created by and thrived on the unity and participation of everyone at the National Stadium. It connected people from different ends of the stadium together in harmony. The involvement of everyone present created a shared, collective experience memorably enjoyed by all.
Artist Statement
The Kallang Wave is perhaps the most iconic creation borne out from the National Stadium. Singaporeans of all ages and strata in society have been involved in the conception of it, while attending football matches or National Day performances.

All that was required to activate the Kallang Wave was the initiation of a few people and in some cases, by just one individual. Once triggered, the Kallang Wave spreads rapidly, sparking off a rush of anticipation, excitement and desire in all present to participate in it and keep the wave in continuous motion.

The exhilaration generated by this collective involvement of everyone present connected everyone from all parts of the stadium, be it the Grandstand or the gallery, and unified all that participated in it together in harmony. This concept of a singular trigger, translated into a cumulative visual display is similarly seen in this work, taken from the benches of the National Stadium itself, which can be triggered to replicate this truly Singaporean experience.
