Playstation Wonderbook Peripheral

One Book: a Thousand Stories
Wonderbook will bring to life a thousand stories in one physical book with a brand new series of adventures and experiences to explore. A powerful storytelling vehicle and tool for the imagination, Wonderbook will bring exclusive content in immersive new ways by putting you at the heart of the action, using augmented reality technology to transform the world around you. Bringing mystery and discovery to your living room, Wonderbook titles will draw you into new worlds, and give you the chance to live in the stories you love.

The Challenge
Designing the Wonderbook brought many challenges throughout the project, with a need to create an aesthetically pleasing peripheral, while ensuring that the technological performance was not being compromised. This was to be a product that Sony Playstation wanted to be proud of, and also be able to market worldwide to a diverse audience.

The Design
The PS Wonderbooks blue colour tone was purposely chosen so that the book would act as a sort of 'green screen'. This allows the players arms and hands to be screened on top of the book, rather then appear benefit the pages. The design was based around optical illusions, trying to focus on the Wonderbooks magical element of gaming. As the project progressed, and a compromise between code and design reached, some aspects of the optical illusions were removed, however, the essence of magic and illusions still remains throughout the design to some extent.
Wonderbook in Action

Below is an example of how the book works on the Playstation. The augmented reality shows moving images on the book itself when looking at the users television screen.
