Auto drivers and their communication patterns

The project explored the on job life ofauto rickshaw drivers and their communication patterns.
The research was carried out by a team of four members across varioustype of auto stands in two Indian cities.

 Knowing Kannada, Marathi and Hindi I wasthe major communicator on field in the research.

 The research methods
1. Participant observations at the rickshaw stands of variouskinds.
2. Long interviews.
3. Group Discussions.
4. Distributing diaries to auto drivers to record the patterns oftravel of auto drivers.

We tried to get a holistic view of theecosystem of the auto rickshaw and drivers lives.

Insights on the following were acquired:
- Distinct types of styles of surviving inthe profession were realized.
- The way they spend time when not engagedby a passenger.
- The different ad – hoc systems that existfor business generation where mobile phones are extensively used.
- The reasons for strong motivation in mostof the youth drivers to move to other professions.
- The networks that exist to get customers.
-The networks with other retailers in the cities and their system of mutualbenefit.

Opportunities for design intervention were spotted and possible solutions were taken up as classroom interaction design assignments.

Getting to know the ecosystem and the context of the auto-rickshaws a better sensibility was developed while designing applications for them.
