Public Space as a Tool for Dialog
Workshop by TYIN Architects
Part of a series of workshops for Changing Urban Environment, Moscow, Russia, 30 July - 4 August 2012

For the workshop we were given an transitory area between a shopping mall and the entrance to the metro station. This area was disliked by the locals and they hurried past it without stopping. Our goal was to invite them to stay and enjoy this place. After asking the local residents what they miss in this area, we found out that there are no benches to sit and rest and no shade.
The group was given a task to design wooden street furniture that would have more than one form of use and would fit in a given module. I took to heart the complaint about the lack of shade and came up with a design for a bench with shading. We had one day to build our installation. So out of the different proposals by the group a simpler system of modules was built. Later I decided to finish my idea. The design evolved into a bench with shading integrated with a bicycle rack.
