Midnight Harvesters

Midnight Harvesters is a series of images documenting the process of harvesting grain in the Midwest.  As the region steadily yields higher crop production, it’s role in providing grain to the nation as well as around the world has never been more important.  Over the past two centuries farming has changed drastically, from an intensive manual labor process to more economical modern machinery.  As the scale of the equipment increases the capability of planting hundreds, even thousands of acres within a single season becomes possible.

With a family history closely tied to agriculture I particularly find interest in the process in which raw materials are extracted, processed, and shipped to market.  While farming is common to the area, I wanted to show a familiar process from a unique perspective.  Utilizing time lapse photography techniques during the late evening hours, it allowed the flow of activity to be capture in a new light.  By investigating the modern practice of harvesting grain, I hope to create a better understanding of the process and a greater appreciation for the demanding work and long hours farmers put into their careers.
