An illustration made for an unsuccessful project for Netflix France. Some cool details and the making-of below.

The story of this project
Recently I was commissioned by a big media agency that wanted to make a game “search and found” to respond to a request of Netflix France.
My work was to produce a large isometric and vector illustration:
a mosaic of small territories. Each one represents a Netflix serie and you have to find specific objects of the serie and intruders from other series.

To present the concept, the test version focused on Strangers Things. (and portions of adjacent lands : Narcos, Orange is the new black and Unfortunate Events)

The making-of
First, I watched all the episodes fast forward and make a lot of screenshots. This is the perfect technique to destroy the pleasure to discover an amazing serie like Strangers Things. Anyway, I tried to have a lot of pictures of each items and I classified them in separate folders.
(note : yes, I work on Windows ;) )
They sent me a list of elements they wanted to see and I was free to organize the illustration like I want.
So first, I made a plan. And there were some difficulties already like the upside down, how could I represent it ?
And the major problem : the difficult choice of the scale : because we had some big elements like buildings but at the same time, we need to see clearly the characters.
To test the scale and to show the artstyle to the client, I made three test objects : a character (eleven), a car (a van) and a building (Will's house).
The second big problem was that the story of Strangers Things is 50% day time vs 50% night time. So we had to find a way to see these two faces.
To better explain the render to the client, I made a quick colorscript.
It's ugly but it's a good start to discuss.
Then, I started to process the illustration. Isometric time !
Ok, the sheriff's trailer was easy because there is almost an isometric view in the serie.
This is a small animation to see the process of construction.
And some objects you can find (there is a lot more)
The projet is at a dead end for now, but it has been noticed , so maybe next year, you could see more.
