THE KEEPER
16 page comic based on novel of the same name By Barry Faville
The story is set in a post nuclear war New Zealand 100 years later. It follows a boy Michael and his friends as they encounter problems like tigers, superstition, prejudice and weapons from the old world.
I had no part in writing the story, and the whole comic had to be condensed into 16 pages so the number of frames per page is far more than what I would perfer.
It was great to visualise a future NZ and try to integrate our natural materials and Subtle Māori influence on the architecture and clothing. I like the idea that if all of New Zealand returned to living in tribes using natural materials, the best uses for them would resemble designs that were Māori in origin. Pre colonial Māori would have perfected the application and usage of things like flax and this knowledge would be extremely useful and effective.
