Entomologie is a set of 18 logos of moths, beetles, and wasps.  For each of these insects, I created 6 designs, each based on a unique style.  These styles are:

            + Single line
            + Fabric collage
            + Doodle
            + Geometric circles
            + Typographic
            + Mosaic

Each logo must work as a scalable, colorless mark while remaining true to these given styles.  In addition to these 18 marks, I hand-lettered the text on the cover of the book in a Blackletter style.  I thought the jagged, Gothic script would complement both my geometric and organic designs.

I already knew what I had to illustrate with these logos, so I spent most of my preliminary time focusing on how to illustrate them.  I did plenty of visual research into these insects' silhouettes, both symmetrical and profile.  I then tried to break down these silhouettes into their most basic shapes while still remaining recognizable, then played with these shapes to create new forms.  My mosaic designs are not too far removed from these initial experiments.  The other, more organic styles were built up from these.

After initial critiques, it was a matter of cranking out the designs in Illustrator.  I collaborated with my peers to get a better idea of which logos were functional and aesthetically pleasing and which ones needed work.  My typographic designs in particular went through several changes.

With this project, I've been able to get a taste for several styles other than the flat, geometric ones with which I am so accustomed.  Out of all of these, I found the typographic prompt to be the most unfamiliar.  I had never designed anything this way before, so all of the experimentation I did with typefaces and letterforms was new to me.  In addition to this, I was able to get a lot of experience in hand lettering, particularly digital hand lettering.  This is the first time I've used a tablet to aid my design, and the freedom in gives you to undo or tweak mistakes is fantastic.

And once again, I've gained more experience in working with a third party printer, experience which will definitely come in handy in the future.
