Title: The Passing of Time

Technique: DSLR Photography Canon 350D- Stock Lenses

Process: The photography displayed was taken using the stock lenses of a old Canon 350D DSLR camera. This image was directly taken from the camera as an original photo, as it was already distinct and unique in its own form.

Reasoning: This image personally portrays the essence of time, as it is a naturally embedded organic form over time. The green stone that is displayed within this image is known as Malachite. Malachite is a derivative of copper, and it is normally formed when the minerals of copper are altered by other chemicals, such as carbonated water. Logically, it is in its basic essence, the passing of time through a natural geographically formed mineral through the environment, however it was the aesthetics of the space that triggered the urge to capture this image. The contrast between dark and light, unappealing and beauty, mysterious and apparent.

Reflection: The quality of image was a main aspect on capturing this particular piece. The challenges were actually getting into the cave itself, as it was a rather long hike. The scale of image and lighting quality was also another key element within this picture. The overall idea of this image was to capture the essence of time, personally, the image was taken this way because that geographic formation was the most unique upon entering this space.

Title: Age To Age

Technique: Stock Lenses of Canon EOS 350D DSLR Photograph.

Process: Auto-Focus Mode. The image captured used the stock lenses of a Canon EOS 350D DSLR Camera. The settings included within this image is the default settings.

Reasoning: What was visually stimulating about this particular image was the colour and lighting involved within this captured photograph. This image portrays the life of ageing and growing all accompanied within the same distinct photograph. The concept of growing is displayed through the unripened fruits, as unripened fruits will continue "grow" until it has achieved a fully mature age for consumption. However, the concept of ageing is seen through the exact opposite of growing, in which the ripened fruits will continue to "age" until it is deemed inedible due the natural ageing process of microorganisms deteriorating to its rotten state. Thus the concept of this photograph, is rather abstract, as some may see life, growth and productivity due to the colour green. However, personally this image portrays the essence of life and death or growing and ageing, which was the reasoning behind the image portrayed.

Reflection: Quality and clarity of image was taken into consideration when taking this image. The colour and lighting of the tone very-well matched with the atmosphere of the photography. The only challenging task of capturing the image was the location, it was quite far to get to, however the fruit markets were definitely worth it. The image was captured with the intention of experiential journey for the individual. It was supposed to be captured to allow the viewers to place their body within the shoes of the photographer and almost experience the atmosphere of the markets.

Title: Sprouting and Decomposing

Technique: Stock Lenses of Canon EOS 350D DSLR Photograph.

Process: Manual Mode. The image captured used the stock lenses of a Canon EOS 350D DSLR Camera. The settings included within this image is the default settings. This image had to be taken with manually as the place was too bright for the camera to auto focus on the tree. In addition, manual was more appropriate in capturing large singular natural objects such as these.

Reasoning: The image portrayed captures the essence of decomposing and sprouting similarly to the previous photograph of ageing and growing. The tree is in its most natural form, sprouting, protruding from the ground if not still growing. At the same time, the tree is slowly decomposing due to the marks and visible bruises presented on the trunk of the tree.

Reflection: The clarity of image whilst capturing the whole of the image worked very well. The most challenging task of this particular image was trying to maintain a perfect symmetry upon capturing this image, not only was it perfect symmetry that was hard, however, this image was taken by hand without any camera support extensions. Trying to maintain perfectly still without any shake factor, whilst taking symmetry into consideration was a hard but rewarding task. The main focus of the image is the tree, the picture was captured with the intention of perfect symmetry to allow the viewer to experience the whole of this photograph.

Title: Change Over Time

Technique: Stock Lenses of Canon EOS 350D DSLR Photograph.

Process: Manual Mode. The image captured used the stock lenses of a Canon EOS 350D DSLR Camera. The settings included within this image is the default settings. The reason this image was taken in manual mode was because, personally was experimenting with different camera modes. In addition, the National Gallery of Victoria didn't allow flashes to be used within this specific area of the gallery as it may potentially harm the materials that were present within this art piece. The atmosphere was a portrayed with lighting of a sepia colour and the area was especially cold. The clarity of image was strictly limited due the lighting conditions and the camera applications.

Reasoning: This particular art piece was distinct and unique personally, because it represents time and change. Change over time, is what this photograph is called because, each individual vase was experimented on and placed in that spot for a specific reason. The vase is identical in model and dimensions to each other placed vase, the only difference is the design changes that were made over a period of time.

Reflection: The image portrayed is aesthetically pleasing in terms of lighting and atmosphere. It was the thought of the word changing and what changes that triggered the photograph to be captured. The location is in Melbourne, Victoria in which I visited during the course of the mid-semester break. The photography was taken with intention of seeing change with different perspectives.

Title: Changing Over Time Part 2

Technique: Stock Lenses of Canon EOS 350D DSLR Photograph.

Process: Auto-Focus Mode. The image captured used the stock lenses of a Canon EOS 350D DSLR Camera. The settings included within this image is the default settings.

Reasoning: Once again this is another image just to capture the essence of natural geographic formations changing over time. This can be shown where the plants are protruding or perhaps engulf the side of the mountain rock.

Reflection: This was the final picture of the week's assessment that was closely related to documenting and changing.

Title: Sibling Understanding

Technique: Stock Lenses of Canon EOS 350D DSLR Photograph.

Process: Auto-Focus Mode. The image captured used the stock lenses of a Canon EOS 350D DSLR Camera. The settings included within this image is the default settings.

Reasoning: The person of interest within this image is a relative of mine. Her name is Jocelynn Liew, and is my Sister. The task on the assessment were a priority of course, but why my Sister, and not my Mom or Dad. The reason I decided to photograph my Sister, was because even though we may have differences towards each other regarding, our viewpoints, tastes etc.Personally, siblings will understand each other more than our parents will. Although she is quite annoying, there are times she has helped me that are of significance of me.

Reflection: There wasn't anything significant or particular about this photography. This was a easy task to complete compared to the first week's assessment of images. The clarity of image once again is a key element in all of these photographs. In addition, a few touch-ups were added in through Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom such as blur and toning of clarity. This task was very efficient and it didn't require any movement of spaces to different locations.

Title: The Common Stranger

Technique: Stock Lenses of Canon EOS 350D DSLR Photograph.

Process: Auto-Focus Mode. The image captured used the stock lenses of a Canon EOS 350D DSLR Camera. The settings included within this image is the default settings. This image implemented the rule of thirds. Instead of taking the picture of the stranger centred, this photography opted to align the object or person of interest on the left side of the grid just to acquire a more symmetrical and wholesome picture.

Reasoning: The hardest part of this particular task is to approach someone whom you've never met before out of the ordinary just to ask if you may capture a picture of them for an assignment. Surprisingly, most of the people which I have encountered happily agreed to do so once I explained the situation and assignment to them. It was then the matter of choosing between photographs and deciding which one the many is the most cleanest in terms of lighting, symmetry, atmosphere, and precision. This image was taken outside of the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne central. It was a nice environment, quiet, with little disturbances of background noise and population. Perhaps, this was another factor which allowed this individual to agree upon said task.

Reflection: The most challenging part was asking for permission from a stranger to agree upon this task. However, once this boundary of stranger to stranger was broken, the tense atmosphere was completely vanished, instead what was left was two individuals discussing their current studies peer to peer. I particularly, found this assessment task quite easy, as it was just a matter of publicly introducing yourself towards others. Being an extrovert, it was quite easy, however what was hard was taking the "perfect' image within a span of time.

Title: Self Portrait

Technique: Oppo R7 Plus Phone Camera. 13 Mega Pixel Quality with DSLR Capabilities.

Process: Auto-Focus Mode. Stock Camera Lenses on Phone Camera. Taking a self portrait with nothing but the original applications of the phone. The idea was to take a picture with as much natural lighting possible without looking into the camera. Generally, taking self portrait is rather unappealing when I personally do it. Therefore I had to find an angle that was pleasing and appropriate towards the camera and to myself.

Reasoning: The reason behind this photograph was to attempt to take a picture of a self portrait without looking unappealing. Personally, when I take self portraits, I think it's rather horrendous, however I settled for this picture. This picture was taken from the main camera, using the natural lighting of the sun to contrast the dark and light on my facial structure.

Reflection: The photograph was difficult because I had to use the main camera instead of the front camera to acquire this picture. However, after countless attempts to create a picture which didn't look appalling, I finally took this picture which didn't require my eyes to look into the camera. I was comfortably able to capture the whole structure of my facial expression and visibly portray the result of a clear and clean photograph.

Title: Henrik Richards the Classmate

Technique: Stock Lenses of Canon EOS 350D DSLR Photograph.

Process: Auto-Focus Mode. The image captured used the stock lenses of a Canon EOS 350D DSLR Camera. The settings included within this image is the default settings.

Reasoning: The image was to capture a classmate in a rather unconventional environment. It was just an average day of two peers meeting up to do an assignment and discuss the options presented to us within the environment. Taking multiple pictures from location to location and learning from one another in order to better the experience and capabilities of image production academically. Henrik is rather fluent in the conceptual and creative design of image production and physically enhance the quality of the image through programs such as Illustrator and Photoshop, however I am only fluent in rendering and quality enhancement of sections, elevations and plans as my field is Architecture.

Reflection: The outcome was a day filled with productivity in terms of academics and field of study. The location of the image was rather unconventional however, elements of mysteriousness, dark and light were present.

Title: Self Portrait Illustration

Technique: Oppo R7 Plus Phone Camera. 13 Mega Pixel Quality with DSLR Capabilities.

Process: The image was first taken on the Oppo Phone Camera. Afterwards, the image was duplicated and printed on a piece of paper. After it was printed, I layered another piece of paper on top of the original and traced the picture of the most defining lines that made up a "self portrait".

Reasoning: Essentially a self portrait is capturing the image of yourself. I layered some tracing paper on top of the original photo and traced the most defining lines that made up a self portrait. The overall outcome is an abstract demonstration of myself and the parts that made up me. The hair, eyes, nose, lips, neck etc. are only the necessary parts which make up my self portrait.

Reflection: This task was quite within the field of my study. Being an architecture student, quick sketching is a must skill that is acquired throughout the years of studying. The tasks presented was very nostalgic as only the first year architecture students were presented with this task of visualisation. However, recently the only projects assigned are as repetitive as ever. Pick a location, draw an elevation, section, plan etc. Rinse and repeat, this task was the ultimate throw-back and allowed me to approach image production with a broader perspective.

Title: Documenting the Ekka.

Technique: Stock Lenses of Canon EOS 350D DSLR Photograph.

Process: Auto-Focus Mode. The image captured used the stock lenses of a Canon EOS 350D DSLR Camera. The settings included within this image is the default settings.

Reasoning: This is official documentary of the experiential journey of the Ekka experience. The intention of this project was created with the concept idea of capturing the Ekka in all of its essence and atmosphere for an individual that has never experienced and wants to know what the Ekka is about. Although I may not have entered the showgrounds of the Ekka, the quality of images are taken with clarity to showcase the Ekka in all of its glory. This first image captures the Ekka in its debut stage, showcasing the fun, adventurous atmosphere of the rides and the people. The Ekka is most commonly associated with the stereotypical viewpoint, that is the Ferris wheel. When people say the Ekka, people often think neon lights and Ferris Wheel.

Reflection: Finding the right location in order to capture the image of the Ekka, it was hard at first, however after several attempts of finding the perfect footing, the image was able to be produced. Capturing the Ekka in its essence was hard, as there was a plentiful of areas that were restricted due to entry requirements. However, there are locations on the outer-boundaries of the Ekka that was if not even better than gaining entrance into the Ekka for photography reasons.

Technique: Stock Lenses of Canon EOS 350D DSLR Photograph.

Process: Auto-Focus Mode. The image captured used the stock lenses of a Canon EOS 350D DSLR Camera. The settings included within this image is the default settings.

Reasoning: This particular image was to represent the thrill and adventurous side of the Ekka. Allowing the individual to experience the thrill and adrenaline rush of frightening heights within the Ekka. The skies having not one single cloud, allows this image to have the essence of freedom and vastness. The image itself is just one single machinery with people on it, protruding the edges of nothingness in the midst of a vast sky, enhances the experiential journey of documenting the Ekka.

Reflection: Finding the right moment to capture this image was quite difficult, as the machine and the timing of the snapshot had to be exact, otherwise the blur-effect will impact the image. This image is rather abstract, as it evokes a sense of freedom and vastness in the world. In addition, feelings of isolation and solitude also are present within this picture. This particular image is unique and distinct in its own way compared to the others taken of the Ekka.

Process: Auto-Focus Mode. The image captured used the stock lenses of a Canon EOS 350D DSLR Camera. The settings included within this image is the default settings.

Reasoning: The contrast between, dark and light, light and shadow and scale. The Ferris wheel is the object of interest within this picture. Capturing the Ferris wheel with the idea of allowing only it to be shown, its defining feature of the Ekka. The lights and a massive man-made object protruding from the ground, has the essence of making people feel small. The Ferris wheel almost is overshadowing the people amongst the Ekka.

Reflection: Finding the right location to capture this image, and waiting for individuals to leave the area before photographing it.

Title: Documenting the Ekka.

Technique: Stock Lenses of Canon EOS 350D DSLR Photograph

Process: Auto-Focus Mode. The image captured used the stock lenses of a Canon EOS 350D DSLR Camera. The settings included within this image is the default settings. I found that photographing images is better than scanning the images itself. This is because photographing images have that natural lighting and effect towards displaying a hand drawn images. Personally, photographing hand drawn images make the image have more character and enhances the quality of the image.

Reasoning: The reasoning behind this image was just a light quick sketch to represent what I felt towards the Ekka in my previous experiences. Last time, I went to the Ekka was when I was about 15 year of age. Most of the time I spent eating and playing overpriced games, however my favourite of the Ekka was the ice-cream. Something about the ice-cream that just made the Ekka experience enhanced and enjoyable.

Reflection: Tiring towards the end of the day, and was going through my thought process of what the Ekka meant to me. Throughout thinking, there was only one thing that popped in my mind which was Ice-cream. So, I decided to just pull up a quick sketch of what the Ekka meant to me.

Title: Memory Lane

Technique: Hand Drawn Images Using Pencils, Shading Techniques and Inking.

Process: This is a one point perspective drawing, which I experimented with. The drawing was done with a T-Square and Set Square ruler in order to achieve the right scale and straight lines. Shading was done with a HB lead pencil in order to produce the solid objects within this picture.

Reasoning: This is just a city landscape of my favourite place when I was child, during my years that I lived in Melbourne, Victoria. One of cities had a alley way which lead to a coffee store, which my parents always took me to during the weekends. I couldn't remember what the name of the store was called, but, I could remember the distinct smell of roasted coffee beans, honey, and the noise of people chattering away. This was the inspiration that took me to recreate the image through hand drawing.

Reflection: Creating from memory was actually a very hard task, it had me dwelling within my thought process before I could determine which space was my favourite place as a child. However, after confirming the place, drawing from my memory without any grid lines or imagery was difficult. The result was a abstract place of the space of my childhood.

Title: Memory Lane

Technique: Hand Drawn Images Using Pencils, Shading Techniques and Inking.

Process: Hot POTATO! The most fun game during my childhood years. The process was quite simple really. I took a satirical approach towards recreating this game. Hot Potato, drawn exactly how it is said. Drew a potato first, then I added the flames on top of it to represent the heat, and then I drew oven mitts as hands implying that the people are throwing the potato.

Reasoning: I drew this image exactly how it is said. The game hot potato was my favourite game in my childhood years. I was a very troublesome and hyperactive kid that couldn't sit still. The game hot potato was my favourite because I often took it to the extremes, where I would throw a something of glass from the other end of the house, and it was the adrenaline of thrill of not breaking something that motivated the other individual to do whatever means to receive the oncoming object. This image brought back a lot of memories.

Reflection: According to my parents I was a very naughty kid, couldn't sit still, which is somewhat correct as my favourite was hot potato. Hot potato was a very thrilling game, as it often results in a individual breaking something.

Process: I was eating this exact brand of lollies before I started drawing the logo. I just placed the brand logo in front of my desk, and I just tried my best to recreate the logo of Haribo and the iconic bear that comes with it.

Reasoning: My favourite treats as a kid was Gummy Bears. I absolutely loved gummy bears, to be perfectly honest, the only sweet that I ever ate was gummy bears, and still is now.

Reasoning: House that I lived in when I started QUT. I only took the entrance of the house, because I interpreted house as home. Home to me is generally the transition of coming from uni to home through the entrance. Entering the house, you are leaving the real world of people, work, studies, etc. Through the entrance of the house, when you are enter is a place of relaxation, this entire walkway depicted here is personally for me a picture of my house.

Reflection: Abstract image of my house. I had to wait until night time to take this image. Other than that, it wasn't very challenging. I just added some clarity and lighting, shadow effects in light room just to add to the tonal atmosphere of the place.

Process: Auto-Focus Mode. The image captured used the stock lenses of a Canon EOS 350D DSLR Camera. The settings included within this image is the default settings.

Reasoning: The picture wasn't on Friday, however it was the day after. My parents drove down to Stanthorpe, just to experience the nature and ambiguity of the town. The town was actually quite nice, there was a food market on the day we went. The reason I took this picture was because there was nothing in the sky. Not a single cloud was present on the day in which I arrived at Stanthorpe. The task said to take a picture of the sky-find something special, to me the word special means clean, uncovered, nature at its finest. The quality of the image and the scenery was enhanced through just the blue skies alone.

Reflection: The location was quite far away, about two hour drive. However, the town was quite nice, very cold, no fuss was dealt with during the capture of the image.

Process: Auto-Focus Mode. The image captured used the stock lenses of a Canon EOS 350D DSLR Camera. The settings included within this image is the default settings.

Reasoning: Not something you see it everyday is how I interpreted this task of the week. How often do you see a empty Church in the middle of no where? I took this image because it was the mysteriousness and disillusion of a Church. There wasn't much going through my head at the time of capture, however all I could think about was the isolation and solitude of a Church. Churches are generally filled with people, however this one wasn't which peaked my interest.

Reasoning: I took this image with scale and life into consideration. The idea of this closeup picture of nature was to create a world amongst the small. Much like humans that exist on this earth, ants or other species that exist amongst this plane of the environment. Taking a closeup picture of something this small shows how much of a world and environment there is in the planes below our feet and the species that exist within it. This could be large to the species that dwell within the area. It was just a play on scale and abstract nature that inspired me to take this picture.

Process: Auto-Focus Mode. The image captured used the stock lenses of a Canon EOS 350D DSLR Camera. The settings included within this image is the default settings.

Reasoning: The textural patterns derived from the ground itself. This texture protrudes from the ground and is rough and uncomfortable to place flesh on. The reason behind this image was the erratic texture of the ground, it is never the same. This is due to the fact that each stone is different in weight and dimension which also results in different sensation of touch and feeling.

Reflection: This task was done within the tutorial itself, as our tutor instructed us to take pictures of textures and patterns around the campus of Kelvin Grove. Many patterns and textures were found and explored in terms of design and field of study. Most student right away, went to nature, however my group opted for more industrial revolutionised textures and patters that were both natural and man made.

Process: Auto-Focus Mode. The image captured used the stock lenses of a Canon EOS 350D DSLR Camera. The settings included within this image is the default settings.

Reasoning: This was a man made object of pattern and texture at the same time. The glass panes were a creation of man made through tampering of fire and sand, and the nature being the mineral that were made to form the pane. The texture is the sensation of the pattern that exists within the glass panes.
