The Desert Vortex was created in 2012 by Dean M Gray with the Desert Hot Springs Foundation, established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to investigative reporting in the Coachella Valley and the hi-desert of California. The Foundation has not yet received confirmation from the IRS regarding our tax exempt status.
The team at Desert Vortex pursues in-depth, high-impact reporting on issues such as education, public safety, health care and the environment. Our reporters also produce stories that hold those in power accountable, while tracking government waste and the misspending of taxpayer resources.
We place a major emphasis on solution-oriented reporting intended to have an impact on the quality of life for desert dwellers in our communities. We engage the public by providing tools and resources, advancing excellence and sustainability in the nonprofit investigative and public service sector.
