Almost Renaissance for Ignant.de

As an individual and an artist the past has held a great deal of wonder and charisma for me.  Drawing from the works of Vermeer, Raphael, Caravaggio and their contemporaries, I sought to achieve the color, light and textures of their paintings in my portraiture work through experimenting and exploring with various photographic techniques.

During the course of my MA in Photography at University of the Arts London, I was exploring uncanny and surrealistic imagery and how it can arise simply from juxtaposition and taking things out of context. The transcendence of an otherwise mundane object to an extraordinary and magical one simply from being removed from it’s usual settings fascinated me. This line of thought and exploration with painting like photographs came together to form the series Almost Renaissance in which I've placed modern day artifacts in compositions that look like renaissance paintings to achieve anachronistic imagery that, hopefully, startles and subverts expectations.

This project is an attempt to blur the borders between photography and painting, history and modernity, nostalgia and familiarity and the everyday and the epic.
