Nellie Bly, pen name for Elizabeth Jane Cochran, was a pioneer in her field and was famous for her exposé, 10 Days in a Madhouse, about the degrading conditions of asylums. She wrote this exposé after infiltrating an asylum under the guise of a mad patient. 

In 1889, investigative journalist Nellie Bly attempted to emulate the journey of Jules Verne’s hero for her newspaper, the New York World in 75 days. She reached international celebrity status when she circled the globe by ship, train, burro, balloon, and more. Bly accomplished the feat in 72 days, 6 hours and 11 minutes, well ahead of Vernes’ male fictional hero.

A search of Nellie Bly’s journey reveals that there are no photos that she took on her journey. She admits early on in her book that she forgot to take a Kodak with her. This developed the concept into a platform for her story to be told through quotes, accompanied by user submissions with their own photos. Thus, the brand name evolved from her lack of a camera. 

NOCAM is a fictional platform that aims to tell Nellie Bly’s story, and share that of a contemporary audience. People will be able to submit their stories, whether it’s an image (Instagram based or not), an anecdote, or both.

By tapping or clicking on a location, one may view posts tagged to that location as well as submit their own. Bly's story is itself told through very short animations giving a glimpse into her journey. 

Globe installations can be placed in public areas, with the aim of attracting user interaction. Each of Bly’s stops on the globe will have an NFC sticker placed on it that would lead to its corresponding page on the website. Once a person uses their phone/tablet with Wi-Fi or 4G, enabling NFC, they can tap any of these stickers to go to the corresponding page and view or read the stories on their phone/tablet, as well as share their own.
