The Ice Kachang Ball Lamp is a outcome of combining the humble heritage of the beloved ice kachang ball with an ambient lamp. Ice kachang is the most popular dessert in Singapore, every Singaporean knows of it. However, the ice kachang ball that the older generation grew up with has faded away.
in my experimentation and exploration, I came across the material concrete, which conveys a cold feeling to the touch similar to the effect of the ice kachang ball. The difference between metals and concrete, although both being able to feeling cold, concrete retains cold much longer compared to metals. In addition concrete giving of a certain crafted personality to the product.

In further test, I was able to create a dual tone concrete base with a uncontrolled split line. These random pattern that the dual tone concrete show individuality, just like most handcrafted furniture, no two are the same.

I also tried various materials for the lamp shade. Paper mache, resin and fibreglass. However, none of these materials could resemble the surface contouring of the ice kachang ball. Finally, using the same method of making the fibreglass on cotton wool, I was able to replicate to a certain degree the ice kachang ball look, with its random uneven surface, slightly wet surface look and translucent layer before the colours.
