Social And Community Mediation In Europe: Experiences a

Social And Community Mediation In Europe: Experiences and Models
is a printed and a pdf handbook with the research findings of the abscm1.

The volume was organized by professors Helena Neves Almeida, Cristina Pinto Albuquerque and Clara Cruz Santos from ocis-fpceuc2.

The Handbook «aims to report and disseminate the main research findings of the Project “advisory bureau for social and community mediation (abscm)”, being a workbook for all of them who want to deep or promote knowledge in the field of Social and Community. It results from the collaboration between a transnational partnership that integrates 8 organizations with responsibility in producing knowledge and professional training.»

The printed version is a 296 page b5 full colour digital printed paperback.

The book is divided in three chapters; which are then subdivided into sections. In chapter I which features the research findings from 7 European countries including 19 case studies, a label with a printed fore-edge gives a tinted hint about the country the reader is reading about.

Moreover the book features an easy overall navigation through a single line on page top containing page numbering and, when in view of a spread, on the odd page the line indicates which chapter one is reading while on the even page the line indicates the current section.

Another navigational cue is given by colour as the graphic elements are tinted differently in each chapter so the reader can easily tell which chapter the data he or she is reading relates to.

The e-book version (pdf) is presented in a cd with an auto-run flash application featuring two versions of the handbook: one most suitable for viewing over the web and on-screen display @72dpi (6,85mb) and another most suitable for printing @300dpi (37,74mb).

The e-book version comprises a toc which replicates the book’s index for ease of navigation and maximum usability.

The book, cd face and sleeve were all made with scribus. Acrobat was used only to put the chapters together. It was necessary because scribus despite being a very precise editor finds it difficult to deal with large files. It also doesn’t offer support for tables as such, so I’ve assembled all table data by dividing it into single rectangles and then putting them together to build the necessary tables.
