Pillowtalk: A Chou Chou 臭臭Exhibition

A chou chou (臭臭) or bantal busuk is something many Singaporeans hold close to their hearts. However, there exists a gap in the research and documentation of these comfort objects. More than just an habit grown out of childhood, these chou chou hold memories and signify home, and even serves as a cultural identifier.

The exhibition encourages conversations about it, and informs and celebrates these objects. It also records narratives and introduces the chou chou as a part of our cultural identity.

To place something seen as a normal, everyday object elevates its position in society. It makes people think about something commonly overlooked, and starts thoughts and conversations.

Interaction is encouraged in Pillowtalk, since these objects are intimate and to be held and felt. Seen here is a story projected on the pillows, where the viewer uses the curves and bumps of the pillow to read the story behind it.
To have Singaporeans write down their own personal experiences or stories or thoughts, and have them sewn into a quilt symbolizes the coming together of many stories into a culture. I decided to call this segment 'Fabric of Us,' a play on words with a double meaning.
