I designed the identity for the Santa Fe edition of the 5th Biennial of Latin American Typography (Tipos Latinos 2012), having been invited to work on the event by Eliana Mercuri, who has been organising Tipos Latinos in the city since 2004. While maintaining the existing attributes of the overall event, I was given total freedom to work with. Here's the result!
Preserving the essence of signs, the romantic liaison of ink and paper – that raw, organic, intuitive link that emerges when you visualise the endless options in your head – I decided to combine gestural calligraphy with Gothic characters, as a humble tribute to Edward Johnston, who featured heavily in this year's event. I was careful to ensure my design didn't overshadow the works on display.
The project included: posters, a digital invitation, a brochure/programme, interior and exterior signage, merchandising (notebooks and pins) and, finally, a popcorn cone to be used during the screening of Richard Kegler's film "Making Faces: Metal Type in the 21st Century".
The event took place from 8th-30th June and featured everything from an exhibition of the 76 selected works, free typography talks, workshops and film screenings and a special show dedicated to Edward Johnston, "Letras con vida", curated by María Eugenia Roballos and Betina Naab. Participé en la gráfica de la Quinta Bienal de Tipografía Latinoamericana (Tipos Latinos 2012), sede Santa Fe,
gracias a la invitación de Eliana Mercuri, organizadora del evento en dicha ciudad desde 2004. Manteniendo los
elementos fundantes que la caracterizan me dieron total libertad y aquí está el resultado.
Preservando el espíritu del signo, la relación de la extensión de la tinta en el papel, ese vínculo primario o intuitivo o inherente que uno tiene cuando visualiza mentalmente las infinitas posibilidades, recurrí a la caligrafía gestual combinado con signos derivados de la caligrafía gótica emulando humildemente a Edward Johnston. Mi idea era dar protagonismo a los trabajos que se verían en dicha muestra.
El proyecto se materializó en: afiche, tarjeta de invitación digital, folleto-programa, identificación interior y exterior y merchandising (anotadores y pines), para terminar saboreando unos ricos pororós en la proyección del film "Making Faces: Metal Type in the 21st Century" de Richard Kegler.
El evento duró desde el 8 de junio hasta el 30 inclusive, unas semanas donde se pudieron ver los 76 trabajos
seleccionados, participar en charlas y talleres y tener la dicha de disfrutar de la muestra del maestro de las letras
