A design for a new crematorium in Victoria Park, Port Elizabeth. The project seeks to explore atmospheres in an ecumenical place of funeral and cremation. The site is well suited next to an existing cemetery and park.
After a visit to an existing crematory where the coffin was lowered into the cremation chamber, the idea came about to rather raise the coffin as a symbol of celebration. This set up the vertical arrangement of spaces. The chapel firmly set itself in the ground and juxtaposition created a gathering space. A strong visual connection to the park in the north ensures a comforting environment.
