Prague Exchange: A Spa on the River

The current project I am working on whilst on exchange in Prague is an open brief project which is set on the river Vlatava that runs through the city and the islands that are scattered along it. We carried out research as a group first and discovered that Prague used to have a popular bathhouse culture along the river but it was something lost in the city today. First the area had to be re-purposed and with another student we are masterplanning the area alongside the new spa island to introduce new housing blocks and a hotel. The goal is to expand the city and bring people to other areas as well as the centre. The spa itself is focused on the journey of the user with a labyrinth pool beginning at the changing room and flowing round to the end point of the building. This is where the final bath is where users can relax in heated water and look out the window towards the cities castle which is framed perfectly through the positioning of the building and island. There are also secondary routes through the building for those who don’t wish to take the journey in the water and would like to get to a specific area like the massage rooms, outdoor pool, sauna, steam room or individual baths.

Drawings not to scale.
