Car for Young Drivers (2014 Project)

CYD (Car for Young Drivers)
The purpose of this project was to design a small car for young drivers which would be cheap to insure. It was designed around the UK vehicle classification of a 'Heavy Quadricycle'. Safety and affordability of panel replacement was key to keeping the insurance cost low enough to tempt new drivers away from cheap second hand cars or mopeds.
Initial Design - Early Sketches
Second Design
After a design review, the entire vehicle proportions changed and the vehicle became more 'open-wheeled' and simple
A Closed Aerodynamics Model was built to test coefficient of drag and calculate vehicle efficiency
This Alias model was then used to make a 1/5th scale (half model) 3D printed base, upon which the variable A-surfaces could be sculpted from Clay to further refine the design
The final 1/5th scale clay model (half model, against a mirror) was designed to have detachable wheels which hide the fixing method to a table. This allowed the model to be transported safely to a number of events in the UK to promote the project and research.
